About event
"do you write about the bear, about yourself, or about us?"
August 2015. Kamchatka. The anthropologist Nastassja Martin is attacked by a bear during the research journey. The attack survives with a serious injury to the jaw. The wounded bear, which struck with an ice ax, flees back to the wild. It describes the healing of the wound, but also its world, fragmented between the volcanic landscape of Kamchatka and the so -called "Western civilization". The extremely honest record of the internal struggle is the defense of vulnerability as an important assumption of understanding and exploring where the boundaries of the "human".
distant homes and different interpretations of events. Surreal world of Russian healthcare and sterility of Western hospitals. Therapy. Stay with my mother and re -scanning with the eteen. To understand the clash with the beast, Nastassja must establish a dialogue with his loved ones, his subconscious and also with the landscape of the bear. It is inevitably contaminated in the light of all its worlds.
The process of dealing with traumatic experience is not just a physical recovery. Nastassy's body becomes a field for politics, a place of unlikely meetings. The western surgery leads a dialogue with a Siberian bear on her jaw. Nastassja is undergoing a confidence test towards the Russian implant and western psychological care. The face marked by another, changed to be unrecognizable, opens the way to internal transformation and searching for interpretation. How to translate the experience of a transformative clash with otherness into their native language and context? What are the boundaries between anthropological research and everyday identities and relationships? It deals with the translation between the thinking and perception of the Western world and the animist practice of nations living in direct dependence on its surroundings. "When electricity disappeared, the world of ghosts returned," the Beast of the Beasts describes Nastassjina's girlfriend Darja the collapse of the Soviet Union. Martin conceives his practice. As an anthropologist, she does not consider himself an impartial bearer of "objectivity" and considers the mission of anthropology to vote in different ways of being in the world and show their political content.
