We invite you to the opening of Jiří Petrbok's exhibition Zuzana in the spa on Wednesday, December 10 at 18:00.
The exhibition Zuzana in the spa presents a selection of works by the Czech painter Jiří Petrbok, who has developed a distinctive and recognizable painting language over the decades. His paintings function as intense, symbol-laden environments, intertwining the grotesque with irony, fantasy characters with fragments of reality, and intimate associations with commentary on the contemporary world. Petrbok works with the image as a space of constant tension - between a conscious gesture and a spontaneous inner flow, between darkness and humor, between what is revealed and what remains hidden.
The key part of the exhibition is made up of large-format paintings complemented by a series of pre-painted originals, which do not arise as sketches or preparatory studies, but as a direct reaction to the finished canvas. They are concentrated fragments that reflect the author's way of working – layering, returning to motifs and, above all, the ability to transform one's own pictorial world into ever-new forms.
The exhibition also works with the effect of double vision. Fluorescent colors and thoughtful lighting reveal additional layers of compositions and change the visual meaning of the works in real time. The viewer finds himself in a situation where one scene changes to another and what remains unnoticed in the light of day is revealed. Petrbok thus offers the viewer an experience of constant visual uncertainty, characteristic of his work.
Jiří Petrbok (1962) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague between 1984 and 1990. From 1995 he worked here as an assistant professor in the drawing studio of prof. Jitka Svobodová and he led this studio from 2011 to 2023. His works are represented in the collections of the Prague National Gallery, the Prague Capital Gallery and numerous private and public collections at home and abroad. He has had numerous exhibitions in the Czech Republic, his work has also been presented as part of many projects abroad, he has exhibited alongside international stars such as the Chapman brothers and Maurizio Cattelan. He lives and works in Prague.
