Vernissage Matej Štetiar | FRICTIONS OF UPROOTING | 23.7.2025 | 18:00
Matej Štetiar is a Slovak artist who is a pupil of the Prague Academy of Fine Arts (currently ended the third year), but we can already consider it artists with a characteristic and unforgettable artistic recitation. abstract figurative painting. His paintings do not come out of real stimuli, but from the heart itself, which makes it a dreamy or mysterious impression. All of this is enhanced by the color combination that Matej Štetiar uses. The basic color we encounter on all its canvas is the black color, which complements various pastel tones. He most often works with acrylic, dry pastel and charcoal.
The Štetiar's creative process and access to painting are also remarkable. The artist first works with a purely abstract painting, in which he then "seeks" human - real fragments that "pulls" the so -called canvas, the resulting painting also gets a drawing aspect. It should be noted that this is not a human figure in a real sense. In his abstractions, the robbery of Rorschach's tests seeks and discovers elements that initially appear to be real, but in the end they look much more abstracted or organic. These elements often give a chaotic and confusing impression. The resulting effect of this artistic approach is that the work created has almost a psychological effect on the viewer. Looking at Štetiar's images of the viewer, a number of questions that are shrouded in the fog attack, at the same time looking at these works, one begins to feel various perceptions, memories or dreams according to his current psychological state.
The title of the exhibition and exhibited works refer to the symbolism of roots in conjunction with the darkness and its subjective perception within the fine arts. The roots themselves symbolize what is hidden under the surface, or human unconscious, the foundations of identity or deeper uninvited layers of the human psyche. Black -black darkness highlights these aspects and creates space for dive into its own. The contact with the work thus reflects the current mental state of each viewer and creates structures of various interpretations for each individual on the basis of its inner "roots".
The exhibition presents the latest works that were created specifically for this exhibition. These are new paintings and embossed work, which are complemented by an older painting from 2024. The connecting element of all works is a black and white combination that resonates with the name of the exhibitions and with the themes of exhibited works.
