About event
We invite you to the opening of the ANDROS exhibition, the theme of which is the male body in contemporary Central European art. ✨
The only thing that contemporary western society has at its disposal is the torso. The torso of a living world in which one shared meaning has been lost, as well as the torso of an individual who can only yearn for his complexity, because he is constantly distanced from it by language and the social roles he holds. There is no doubt that this incompleteness affects masculinity today. In recent decades, the revision of established templates and the loosening of rigid gender roles have intensified discussions about the nature of masculinity and necessarily lead to existential questions. Who is this man anyway? And what determines it?
The ANDROS exhibition project looks at how contemporary Central European art approaches these questions when depicting the male body. The material component of gender identity, which for centuries has served as a classic art theme, in contemporary work also becomes a projection surface for doubts, searches and re-establishment of the male form. The collective exhibition ANDROS follows the theme in a wider regional context and, in addition to domestic works, also presents works by artists from Germany, Austria and the Visegrad countries.
The position of curator was taken up by the writer Vratislav Maňák, who through her elaborates and advances the concepts presented in the book With Wittgenstein in the Gay Sauna (2026).

The only thing that contemporary Western society has at its disposal is a torso – the torso of a lived world in which the one shared meaning has been lost, as well as the torso of an individual who can only long for complexity because language and ossified social roles constantly push him away from it. This inadequacy undoubtedly concerns masculinity today. In recent decades, the re-evaluation of established norms and the relaxation of rigid gender roles have intensified discussions about the nature of masculinity, inevitably leading to existential questions. Who is a man, really? And what defines him?
The exhibition project ANDROS explores how contemporary central European art addresses these issues in its depictions of the male body. In contemporary artistic creation the physical component of gender identity, which has served as a classic artistic theme for centuries, is now becoming a canvas for doubt, exploration, and the redefinition of the male form. The group exhibition traces this theme within the broader regional context, presenting works by artists from Germany, Austria, and the Visegrad countries alongside those of Czech artists. The role of curator was taken on by writer Vratislav Maňák, who is using this exhibition to further develop and expand upon the concepts presented in his 2026 book With Wittgenstein in a Gay Sauna. Knapová, Ondřej Filípek, Pavel Forman, Andros Foros, Andrej Haršány, Tomáš Honz, Matthias Herrmann, Michal Heriban, Siegfried Hertz, David Javorský, Václav Jirásek, Ruprecht von Kaufmann, Kateřina Komm, Karolína Koblen, Samuel Kollárik, Tomáš Kubík, Zbyněk Linhart, Jiří Marek, Michal Macků, Ivana Mojšová, Gábor Nagy, Tomáš Němec, Karolína Netolická, Ivan Pinkava, Gábor Pintér, Jiří Petrbok, Magdalena Rajchlová, Karol Radziszewski, Spyros Rennt, Thomas Riess, Wilhelm Sasnal, Adam Šakový, Antonín Sondej, Alois Stratil, Attila Szűcs, Alexander Tinei, Juraj Toman, Jan Uldrych, Katalin Verebics, Ágnes Verebics, Stefan Wimmreuter
