About event
We cordially invite you to the opening of the fourth exhibition JAN HOLKUP — FROM THE HEIGHT OF A PLACE, which will take place on December 3rd at 5:00 p.m. in the PARADAJS PHOTO GALLERY – a new presentation space dedicated to photography, which can be found in the Bethlen house in Banská Bystrica.
Our landscapes are literally interwoven with hunting lodges, and for most of us the sight of them has become a matter of course. However, Jan Holkup shows in his photographs that among them we can find exceptional buildings that are worth documenting. He looks for poses that stand out due to the originality and creative approach of their authors. It opens up a world of colorful shapes, colors, unexpectedly used materials and imaginative construction solutions. It represents hunters as builders and constructors with a great deal of wit, aesthetic sense and courage. It authentically captures the slowly disappearing world of freedom, which is not yet bound by construction and safety standards. The project thus becomes not only a photographic collection, but also a visual reflection on human creativity, improvisation and the relationship with nature.
Interest in this topic arose accidentally during trips to nature and gradually grew into a long-term documentary project. The author systematically searches for perches across the country, often with the help of hunting forums and social media communities. The result of his more than sixteen years of work is the author's book "Jan Holkup: Posedy", published by the PositiF publishing house. The publication presents a selection of the most interesting constructions - from simple constructions in treetops to complex, technically sophisticated perches with solar panels or mechanical elements.
Jan Holkup (1981, CZ) graduated from the Czech Technical University and makes a living as a designer of machinery for industry. In addition to work, he devotes himself to his two young daughters and his hobbies – documentary photography, wild water, playing the piano, trips to nature and bird watching. He was fascinated by photography in his early childhood while developing photos in the bathroom with his father. He has been photographing poses for 16 years. He has been exhibiting and publishing Posedy since 2019. In addition to poses, he has also been devoted to capturing the theme of childhood through photography.

PARADAJS PHOTO GALLERY
PARADAJS PHOTO GALLERY is a new presentation space dedicated to photography. In the form of periodic exhibitions, it materializes the long-term research and archival activities of the virtual web magazine PARADAJS PHOTO·MAG and expands the presentation possibilities of the international photography festival and related media PARADAJS PHOTO·FEST with a year-round program.
PARADAJS PHOTO GALLERY specializes in professional research, theoretical reflection and presentation of domestic and foreign photography. In the founding year of 2025, the gallery's dramaturgy focuses on chamber exhibitions of Slovak and Czech photographers of the younger and middle generations, whose current work is characterized by a unifying theme, mapping the ephemeral phenomena of the connection between man and cultivated or wild nature. The common theme of the photo exhibitions emphasizes the ecological turn in contemporary art, as one of the key social contributions of contemporary photography. The intention of both institutions is to build a paradise - synergistic relations between established and non-established culture and to strengthen professional cooperation in the field of presentation and research of visual art in Slovakia.
