About event
Dear ladies and gentlemen,
We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition
Juraj Toman and Matúš Jurčík | TERRITORY PLAN
Opening: Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at 6 p.m.
Exhibition duration: March 26. – 9/5/2026
Juraj Toman and Matúš Jurčík work in the medium of painting and assemblage. Their collaboration is based on the environment of architecture and urban planning – Toman reflects the aesthetics of the construction process, engineering and planning with the image creation process, while Jurčík experiments with the combination of building materials and painting layers. Together they explore the tension between stability and decay, between space and its abstraction.
Juraj Toman (*1985, Trenčín) is a Slovak painter whose work is based on the intermingling of themes, genres and painting approaches. His work is based on the reflection of the environment in which he lives and creates - from urban peripheries, studio situations and night scenes, which become not only a motif, but also a framework for other image layers. Plein air and studio painting of urban spaces can function as an autonomous image, but at the same time as a background for figurative compositions with real characters. These enter what the author refers to as a "renewed painting program" - a conscious practice of repainting older canvases, where repainting is not a correction, but a method. One image begins to contain another image within itself. Fragments of the past remain present as traces, vistas or autonomous image fields. This principle of layering and rewriting creates a tension between continuity and discontinuity, between memory and current intervention.
Matúš Jurčík (*1998, Šaľa) graduated from the ŠUP in Hlohovec in the field of promotional graphics. He continued his studies at the University of Konstantin Filozof in Nitra at the Department of Art and Education. Since 2023, he has been working as a teacher at the ŠUP in Hlohovec, where he teaches professional art subjects. From 2025, he became one of the judges of the international competition in the creation of a book mark for children Ex libris Hlohovec. His artistic approach to graphics is characterized by experimentation, which allows him to discover new intersections between techniques. He draws inspiration mainly from the world of architecture and building elements. He is fascinated by industrial motifs, worn surfaces, processes of decomposition and layering, which he transforms into an artistic language full of contrasts.
The exhibition project is realized with the support of the Tatra banka Foundation.
We look forward to your visit.
