The traditional Christmas concert of the women's chamber choir Les Sirènes, Sirénčatka, Sirénčatá, Liv Bielovič and guests under the direction of conductor Lukáš Kunst on Wednesday 17.12.2025 at 19:00 in the Church of the Brethren on Cukrová street in Bratislava will be characterized by a dramaturgically varied palette of listeners attractive Christmas repertoire. One of the key works of the concert will be the Christmas cycle Ceremony of Carols by the British composer Benjamin Britten. In 1939, Britten left England, but after spending three years in the United States, he found out which country was his real home and decided to return to his native land. On the return journey across the Atlantic waters in May 1942, during a stop in Nova Scotia, he procured a copy of The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, and its lyrics probably became the inspiration for composing this cycle of carols. Since he was also dabbling in the idea of composing a harp concerto during that period, he turned his creative efforts into this unique piece for a three-part female choir accompanied by a harp. The composer opens and closes the composition with a Gregorian chant, which borders various carols depicting the Christmas story in different styles, from the energetic Wolcum Yole to the touchingly tender "Balulalow", the energetic "This Little Babe" to the solemn "Deo gratias". Britten's cycle, which is rarely performed in our region, will be smoothly followed by contemporary Slovak work - in the world premiere, Les Sirènes will present the à cappella work Musical chorea pastoralis by Ľuboš Bernáth and Cantata about Christ Jesus for women's choir and harp by Daniel Remen. The harp parts of the evening will be performed by Slovak harpist Adriana Antalová. The end of the concert will be a selection of popular Christmas songs in a musical style, accompanied by the František Báleš Ensemble and LIV BIELOVIČ - a special guest.
An attractive selection of Christmas songs with the potential to appeal to a wide range of audiences promises a unique experience that simply cannot be missed.
