About event
The Weekend of Closed Borders will transport you to the Iron Curtain period
The Bratislava Self-governing Region (BSK) will commemorate the anniversary of the Gentle Revolution with the Weekend of Closed Borders event. Visitors will experience the atmosphere of the Iron Curtain firsthand - from a theatrical performance in a bus to a military exercise to a memorial to the victims of the totalitarian regime. The county has also prepared a series of cultural and educational activities dedicated to freedom and history.
"It is important not to forget our past and the moments that shaped our freedom. We must also remember the time of unfreedom and show the younger generations how difficult it was once to cross borders. We should not take freedom for granted - we are very lucky to be able to live, travel and express ourselves freely today. Let's appreciate it and let's not forget those who paid for it," said BSK chairman Juraj Droba.
Saturday, November 15
The program will start on Saturday, November 15. The Iron Curtain experience bus will bring the dramatic story The Story on the Run, presented by the White Theater. Instead of ordinary transportation, passengers will witness and participate in an artistic performance that revives the atmosphere of the times when crossing the border meant risk and courage. The bus will depart at 1:00 p.m. and participation requires online registration on the website bratislavskykraj.sk/jazda-autobusom.
Under the Freedom Cycle Bridge in Devínská Nová Ves, visitors can participate in a program that offers several experiential activities. While walking in the footsteps of border guards, they will learn about the functioning of the Iron Curtain and the stories of those who tried to escape for freedom. Historian Ľubomír Morbacher from the Institute of National Memory will provide an expert interpretation.
In the afternoon, military training will come to life like you've never seen it before - an interactive program in which visitors can experience situations faced by a "conscious citizen" of the former Czechoslovakia, including an imitation of a grenade throw, obstacle courses or canine demonstrations. The event will also include the symbolic closing of the bridge and the stamping of exit clauses as a reminder of the times when it was not possible to cross the border freely.
The climax of Saturday will be a commemoration of the victims of the Iron Curtain, which will take place at 4:00 p.m. under the Freedom Cycle Bridge. As part of the ceremony, the military music of the Slovak Armed Forces will be played, the names of the victims will be read, and ceremonial salvos with the laying of wreaths.
Sunday, November 16
The program continues in the Bratislava Puppet Theater on Dunajská Street under the name No Children, which will offer a series of creative and theatrical activities about freedom and democracy. At 3:30 p.m., the MÚR workshop will begin, inspired by Petr Sís's book about childhood in a totalitarian regime. This will be followed at 4:45 p.m. by the opening of an exhibition by pupils of ZŠ Istrijská on the topic of freedom and democracy, and at 5:00 p.m. the program will close with the production of Stories of Walls, which tells about walls, borders and the need for understanding between people.
Monday 17 November
The event will end on Monday 17 November, which in Slovakia is a symbol of the fight for freedom and democracy. The Bratislava self-governing region will commemorate him with a number of cultural programs.

The discussion will be led by Juraj Bača together with guests Juraj Drob, Radoslav Ragač from the Institute of National Memory and dramaturg Saša Sarvašová.
