About event

Film cabinet special: VISCONTI
(lecturer's introduction + film)

🏛️Luchino Visconti's aristocratic origin significantly shaped his view of history. In his films, he repeatedly returns to the moments when the old world falls apart and a new one is born. The demise of the nobility, the illusions of the revolution, and the moral decline of society are depicted with critical accuracy. In the film Passion (1954), personal betrayal is intertwined with political betrayal. The monumental Cheetah (1963) captures the end of the aristocratic era during the period of Italian unification. In the historical fresco Ľudovít Bavorský (1973), we follow a lonely monarch in the middle of a crumbling monarchy. He explores the dark chapter of the 20th century in the films Star of the Big Dipper (1965) and Twilight of the Gods (1969), where personal dramas intermingle with the onset of totality.

📽️Ludwig
In 1972, Luchino Visconti made a film in which he depicted the tragic life fate of the mentally ill Bavarian king Ludwig II. After the films Twilight of the Gods (1968) and Death in Venice (1970), Ľudovít Bavorský presents the final part of the "German trilogy".

Visconti created with great precision a portrait of the gradual decline of a young and beautiful king who loved art and despised the mundane, but was not a good ruler and the threat of mental illness hovered over his entire life. Throughout his life he sought to build a universal realm of art that would help him find absolute beauty.

The film is presented in a restored digitized version in 4K resolution.

Restored in 4K resolution in 2022 by StudioCanal, La Cinémathèque française and Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Compass Film and Ohonte Films, with financial support from Chanel and CNC - Center national du cinéma et de l'image animée at the L'Image Retrouvée laboratory, from the original camera negative.
