Transatlantic biographies is a program of visits to the permanent exhibition of the Lisbon Museum - Pimenta Palace, followed by a conversation around slavery, inquisition and religiosity. The inaugural session of this program is dedicated to the history of Luzia Pinta.
The case against Luzia Pinta, a black woman of Angola and enslaved in colonial Brazil, is emblematic by the complex intersections between racialization, gender and religion in the Americas. In 1739 Luzia was accused of practices considered heretical by the Portuguese Inquisition, namely African religious rituals and alleged practices of witchcraft. Its history and route are the starting point for the first conversation in the kitchen.
