In 1975, Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers conceived of the Conquest of L'Espace, atlas à l'usage des Artists et des Militaires - work consisting of a tall book (about 4x2 cm), complemented by a poster. On their 38 pages, silhouettes from 32 countries, mostly from the northern hemisphere, organized alphabetically and presented with exactly the same height.
in 2015, American artist Joe Scanlan founded Broodthaers Society of America-an organization dedicated to analyzing resonances and the influence of Belgian work in the political and cultural context of the United States. In addition to promoting exhibitions and other events, Broodthaers Society houses a growing file of over 200 printed materials that the Belgian produced throughout his life or that others produced under the influence of his work. Simultaneously a pop art object and an upholstered facsimile, the work is assumed as an XXL version of the original Broodthaers. Easier to consult and more pleasant to handle, the new version includes at least one country for each letter of the alphabet, and the new entrances are subject to diversity, equity and inclusion, favoring countries of the southern hemisphere and others that did not exist when Atlas was first published. Eus produced from originals from Marcel Broodthaers, as well as facsimiles or versions that he himself made of his work and the work of artists such as Mallarmé or Baudelaire, all from the Broodthaers Society collection.
