“Vivaldi and the others – twenty Italian composers”

the new book by Kees Vlaardingerbroek, published by Uitgeverij IJzer.

Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 8 p.m.
Keizersgracht 564, Amsterdam

The book presentation will be moderated by Roland Fagel, historian, translator and great expert on Italy.

The evening includes a short musical intermezzo with soprano Channa Malkin, accompanied on lute by Mike Fentross. They will perform works by Tarquinio Merula and Antonio Vivaldi.

Kees Vlaardingerbroek, musicologist and artistic director, and author of the book, talks about his love for twenty Italian composers whom he has chosen according to a completely personal approach: namely those who have fascinated him most over the course of his career.

The result is an intimate and passionate journey through Italy, the "promised land of music", which begins in the 16th century with Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and ends with Luciano Berio. The book follows the lives of twenty composers and highlights striking episodes and remarkable anecdotes: from the most moving lullaby ever written to the story of an idiosyncratic composer who, having fled from Venice, came under the protection of Louis XIV; from the turbulent family of Antonio Vivaldi - who moved on the edge of legality - to the forgotten fate of a grand master like Francesco Bartolomeo Conti. The complex relationship of Giuseppe Verdi with the Paris Opéra is also discussed, as well as some dark sides of Giacomo Puccini's soul, and much more. author

Kees Vlaardingerbroek was born in 1962 in Ermelo. From 2006 to 2023 he was artistic director of the prestigious NTR Saturday Matinee in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Thanks to his efforts, many forgotten Italian masterpieces have been rediscovered and performed again.

At his invitation, many Italian conductors, singers and musicians performed in the Netherlands.

Nowadays Vlaardingerbroek works internationally as a publicist and artistic advisor. In addition, he expects to complete his PhD research in 2025 on the revolutionary Devotional Hymns of the Amsterdam poet and preacher Rutger Schutte (1708–1784).

During the evening, Willem Desmense from Uitgeverij IJzer will also be present, and it is possible to purchase the book on site and have it signed by the author.

Admission is free and the meeting will take place in the Dutch.
