Vladimír Houdek: Set of motion
▪️ 10/12/2024 - 26/1/2025

We can easily imagine movement from point A to point B. The universe is full of points that it can never reach the alphabet is enough, whether we see them, or rather suppose them. How much movement is going on without us knowing and being able to track it? What all belong to the set of motion? People move in the city, in the region, on the continents, all over the planet. Stars and planets circulate in vast galaxies, molecules vibrate in matter. We examine the regularity and unexpectedness of movement between points, around points, describe the orbit, ecliptic, Brownian motion. We create schemes, diagrams, rules in order to understand everything that is happening. The world is one big continuous change, constant movement.

Our ideas about the future were shaped by both modernity and various utopias. We go back to the crossroads and look through the systems and hypotheses of the past and look for the center in expansions and centrifugal forces. Vladimír Houdek revolves around the artificialism of Štyrský and Toyen, touches on black suprematism, but also alchemical processes and Kandinsky's reflections on spirituality in art. Permanent sources include books and maps, man's guides to an unknown world.

The painting process has many stages, layering the mass of acrylic paints, adding, drying, cutting, removing. Gouache and collages are created in parallel. The colors of the spectrum, especially yellow, expand the glowing whiteness and arched black of past times on contemporary canvases. The names of the image cycles and exhibitions carry the energy of words: Trembling, Insomnia, Round and into silence, Melancholy, Roaring breadth. The ubiquitous geometry is the language of science and abstraction. It is also associated with the rings of Saturn, the three spheres of giftedness: imagination, reasoning reason and spiritual intuition, as seen in Dürer's engraving Melancholia. Through the concentric circles urging consciousness, the painter evoked the pulsating intensity of a migraine. Vladimír Houdek's painting can be characterized through the mutual movement of the concepts of illusion, parable, geometry, collage, matter, concept, knowledge...

Vladimír Houdek (*1984) was born in Nové Město, Moravia. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the painting studio of Vladimír Skrepl. He worked with Jan Merta and the German artist Silke Otto-Knapp in the guest teacher's studio. In 2010, he won the Critic's Prize for Young Painting and two years later the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize. His geometrically and at the same time expressively formed work has been an important part of the contemporary Central European painting scene for the second decade.
