“Through their self-sameness, their repetitiveness, they stabilize life. They make life last [haltbar].”
Byung-Chul Han

Volatile Crop seeks to evoke the lack of permanence in the form of a performance-installation. Composed for the CO.LABS Outdoor Zone, the work draws on the processes of harvest (as a ritual) to explore the current meaning of 'the fruit of labor' in a time of forced production.

The performance-installation, created through the Ephemerality Residency Program, can be visited from October 24 to 25 between 3pm and 6pm in the CO.LABS park in the company of the artist duo.

Volatile Crop is part of a work-in-progress research, which tries to formulate and apply a cultural rite against the “intense life”.

Haibo Illés (1998) is a puppet- set-designer and Richárd Melykó (1994) an intermedia-artist. They are a Budapest-based transdisciplinary artist duo who have been working together since 2020, who’s works are often site-specific, responding to the given space and often experimenting with the temporal extension of performance. Their process-based performances more recently reflect on the psyche as a productive force. Based on Byung-Chul Han's writings, they attempt to create spaces at the intersection of speculative and performative for the family artist enterprise perspective (Drill, 2023; RAW, 2024). Among others, they participated in the Bazaar Performance & Dance Festival, Nebenan/Mellettünk Independent art from Hungary and DIVADLO DNEŠKA - International Festival and Conference of Documentary Theatre. Their works have been shown in Bratislava, Copenhagen, Drama, Dresden and Prague in addition to Budapest (mainly Trafó House of Contemporary Arts).
