About the book title:
He IS “Modern Soul”! The fans hitchhiked up and down the country following the band, who wanted to miss a modern soul concert!? From the GDR, the band wrote international music history. Modern Soul recently celebrated its 55th anniversary. Colleagues, fans and friends persuaded Hugo Laartz, bandleader and “workhorse on the keyboard”, to put his very personal commentary on this success story on paper. And he did it – “before it’s too late” – and here he presents the chronicle of his life for soul music. Uneitel tells how his colleagues from the music scene know him - Uschi Brüning, Regine Dobberschütz, Klaus Lenz, to name just a few. At heart he remained the Berlin urchin of the post-war period - straightforward and down-to-earth. This awakens in the reader an unexpected sympathy for vanished worlds in which the sound of blues, rock and soul breathed hope for humanity, love and respect into people's hearts even behind walls.
Gerhard "Hugo" Laartz, born in 1940 in Berlin. During his apprenticeship as a telecommunications mechanic, he founded the skiffle band "Music Stromers", and after a ban on performing in 1968, he founded the "Modern Septet", from which the "Modern Soul Band" emerged in 1970. In addition to cover versions of international soul artists, there were increasingly more of our own compositions. Laartz also wrote film music for DEFA. »Modern Soul« with Hugo Laartz as bandleader was one of the leading and most popular music formations in the GDR and is today one of the »longest-serving« still active bands that gives successful live concerts and releases CDs.
