About event
The traditional pastoral program of the international organ festival Vivat vox organi will make Christmas time in Banská Bystrica even more pleasant for music lovers. This time the listeners are listening to the well-known Christmas composition of Jakub Jan Ryba. His Rybovka, i.e. Czech Christmas Mass, for organ and quartet will be heard. The concert will be enriched by Christmas shepherdesses from the Slovak countryside with bagpipes, whistles and violins. The Christmas concert of the Vivat vox organi festival will begin on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at 7:00 p.m., in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Radvani - on Hôrka.
Rybova's Czech Christmas Mass was created in 1796 and its author, in addition to the music, is also the author of the text of this Christmas Mass. The story of the piece tells about Christ's announcement, birth and the arrival of the shepherds to the manger. Its character is pastoral and the story is set in the Czech countryside, whose realities are very close to the Slovak ones, from the end of the 18th century. The Czech Christmas Mass by Jakub Jan Ryba is a composition full of simple joy and traditional folk piety, which was typical of the rural customs of celebrating Christmas. This is also why this concert is set in the rural environment of the former ancient village of Radvaň, in which a rural Gothic church from the 13th century has been preserved. It is located on Hôrka, above the former village, today the urban district of Banská Bystrica – Radvaňa. Ryba's original and original orchestration consisted of solo voices and mixed choir, flute, two clarinets, two French horns, trumpet, two violins, viola, double bass, timpani and organ. In Radvan, we will listen to Rybovka in a minimal version of only five musicians: quartet and organ. Perhaps this is how it was presented in villages and towns, where there were not as many musicians as planned for this piece by its author. Performers: Ivana Kurtulíková (soprano), Kristína Suchá (alto), Karol Kurtulík (tenor), Milan Hajaš (bass), Miroslava and Juraj Dufekovci (bagpipes, violin, whistles), Ján Bulla (organ).
