TEXTILES - jacquard project Basketlike, embroidery project Playfullness
BASKET-LIKE, BASKET-WHAT, BASKET-WHY
The Basketlike project explores the symbolic, cultural and artistic significance of the basket. Thanks to a pseudo-scientific approach, he speculates on the possibilities of mimicking textiles. The idea is demonstrated through the basket object for its archetypal textile character and a reference to the origin of textile techniques. The author lends it a narrative from the biological world, thereby creating the invented concept of textile mimicry. It is based on the research of basket structures in the ÚĽUV archive. It traces the imitation of the basket through structure and pattern, specifically focusing on woven textures and relationships of horizontal and vertical tying. It manipulates and multiplies the spatial and surface illusion, deconstructs it into three views that point to the multiplicity of perceptions of an ordinary object and its view through the optics of textile layers.
From the gradient pattern creating a spatial basket illusion to the manipulation of spatial effects directly on the jacquard machine, the project culminates in an object combining both of these principles, thus becoming a subjective translation of basket principles into textile jacquard weaves and intertwining the past and craft with the future and digitization.
The objects are an archive of glimpses of the basket. The author pushes the boundaries of jacquard weaving with the subjective analytical multifacetedness of a specific subject and draws attention to the nuances in the textile approach. Textiles are unique outputs that combine custom designed weaves, pointillist approach of color synergy and hand interventions. The author perceives the whole process as a textile game in the field of design, technology and concept, as the name of the project gently suggests. The textiles were created as a result of research at the FTI-lab in Ghent (BE) and Textil Labe in Tilburg (NL).
The project received several awards, including the Rector's Prize for a remarkable diploma project, the Prize for Excellent Student Design, the Prize of the Director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Prague or second place in the Czech Grand Design Discovery of the Year category. The project was presented at the London Design Festival 2024. It also won the prestigious Vogue CS Talent 2024 award.
PLAYFULLNESS
Experimental variations in modern digital embroidery inspired by the artistic approaches of the German Bauhaus school. The author examines the simple line, the line as a basic expressive and graphic tool. He transfers experimental graphic exercises on paper to the medium of digital embroidery and follows their transformation and material manipulation. The basic colors red, blue, yellow and their shades are assigned to specific motifs of the lines and look for relationships between the color and the shape of the line.
The experimental approach underlines the testing of the possibilities of digital embroidery and the liberation of the medium of embroidery into a separate expressive element without background material. The author therefore uses a water-soluble starch-based base material on which she embroiders the selected motifs. He then dissolves them in water, leaving only the embroidery itself. Despite the technical limits of the machine, a large area of embroidery is created, which works thanks to repeating motifs. The author reduces and enlarges them. They can be added endlessly to the embroidered parts, making it possible to create an endless non-repeating pattern.
PAULA BENČAŤOVÁ
CERAMIC
Paula Benčaťová's work brings an in-depth look at the topics of identity, psychology and human emotion in the context of personal and social changes. Through ceramic material, he investigates the processes of transformation that affect the inner world of an individual. "I am fascinated by the differential phases of life and how these transformations shape and influence our inner world - how they shift and transform us. I perceive this dynamic process intensively when working with ceramic material, which is malleable and leaves a tangible trace of manual processing. The creation itself, from the initial idea to the final work, goes through several stages. My works reflect the complexity of human emotions - often non-linear, but changeable, sinusoidal, sometimes even destructive, which lead to new beginnings." Paula's ceramic objects are not just material, but become a direct mirror of her own inner feelings and experiences. They are fragile, courageous and at the same time, they sensitively explore the limits of their form. Her work invites the viewer to consciously slow down, to perceive the present moment and to return to deep self-reflection. For her, ceramics become a means by which she transfers intimate experiences to tangible objects the nuances captured in the soft material reflect the power of transformation that Paula puts into each work. The dialogue between the fragility and stability of the material represents the balance between the uncertainty and the stability of the person. Themes such as time, its flow and fleeting moments are key for Paula in his work, he captures the very process of passing time and transforms it into an artistic language that tells the story of our being and its (in)constancy.
The name of the exhibition LÍNIE is a connection between the work of both authors.
The exhibition project is supported by public resources provided by the Art Support Fund.
