About event

When dealing with diversity and difference, religious communities often show themselves to be places where conflicts are not only endured but actively dealt with. We take a look at this potential using the topic of migration: While migration is often treated as a hurdle or threat in social discourse, for many religious communities it is part of everyday life - a way of living together that is constantly being renegotiated. How do religious groups structure internal conflict processes and what internal resources make it possible to tolerate differences? We talk and discuss this with voices from different communities.

Religious communities have their own resources for dealing with conflicts - resources that often remain invisible in everyday life. They develop forms of togetherness that are based on shared experiences and practices, community structures and religious traditions. Particularly when dealing with diversity, tensions or internal differences, religious communities often show themselves to be places where conflicts are not only endured but also actively dealt with.

This can be clearly seen in the topic of migration. In broader society it is often negotiated as an area of tension and a line of conflict - accompanied by polarization, simplification and demarcation. The debates then follow an “us and them” pattern in which migration appears as a hurdle or a threat. In religious communities, however, diversity is often seen as part of everyday reality - and with it the need to continually reshape cohesion.

How does this work? How do religious groups shape internal conflict processes, for example between generations, between different migration and minority experiences or social milieus? What inner resources make it possible to endure, process or relate to differences? And what can be learned from this for how society deals with migration and diversity?

The focus of the event is on voices from different religious communities who report on their practice. It is not about a survey of individual groups, but about an equal exchange.

Everyone who is interested in religious perspectives on coexistence, migration and conflict resolution is invited - from religious communities, education, civil society or personal commitment.

The event takes place in the context of the project Religions: Underestimated Potentials of Social Conflict Transformation (ReKo) and in cooperation with Minor - Project Office for Education and Research.
