About event

Join us for Waste Series 5 to hear about the archaeology of Amsterdam as a waste-made landscape, and about the Amsterdam Can Collective!

In the sixth and last lecture of this series, the development of Amsterdam will be highlighted against the background of recurring problems with refuse from the 15th-century onwards. Ranjith Jayasena will discuss the city regulations against illegal dumping of garbage, historical waste management and the urban land-reclamation projects that were created on the basis of a circular economy. In contemporary Amsterdam, the streets seem more polluted than ever, residents are angry and point at the homeless community, deposit machines are often broken, and policymakers struggle to achieve a waste management infrastructure that covers up all this mess. But what is actually happening on the streets of Amsterdam? Mara Hanna Voss will try to answer this question by diving into the daily experience of the can collectors in Amsterdam. Join us at HG 14A00, VU Amsterdam to expand your knowledge and gain a new perspective on waste!
