About event
Florence Beatrice Smith Price (1887 - 1953) and Edith Jacobson (1897-1978)
Inga Höfer and Gisela Notz present the following biographies from the popular calendar "Trailblazers" (2026):
Florence B. Smith Price: "I have two handicaps: I am a woman, and black blood flows in my veins". Musical prodigy. First piano concert at the age of 4, at the age of 11 he published his own compositions. She became probably the world's best-known black classical music composer. As an African-American woman, however, she was denied due recognition in the white-male-dominated music world during her lifetime. After her death she was forgotten. Oeuvre of more than 300 works.
Edith Jacobson: doctor and psychoanalyst. Politicized by growing Nazi fascist rule. In a dangerous double life as a Jew, she was a member of the Aryanized board of the “German Psychoanalytic Society” (DPG) and a supporter of the resistance group “New Beginnings”. Arrested in October 1935. She survived in exile in the USA and is now considered a leading theorist of post-Freudian American psychoanalysis.
