About event
In our series World Cinema in collaboration with the Eye Film Museum is this time showing the documentary 'Transit Levantkade' (1991) by Rosemarie Blank.
'Transit Levantkade' is a stylized documentary portrait of the Levantkade in the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands, where so-called ' city nomads' sought refuge. At the time it was a rugged no man's land, today it is full of expensive homes. In the 1920s the Levantkade was a gateway for Eastern European emigrants on their way to South America. In the 1980s, the area became a refuge for homeless people and immigrants who could not find their place elsewhere. They lived in their own world on the Levantkade, until the police came to clear the area because almost all existing buildings had to make way for new construction. The documentary sketches a fascinating portrait of a number of city nomads, images and sounds that are interspersed with archive material of immigrants, on the same fringes of the center of Amsterdam, in the year 1926.
Rosemarie Blank took the script, a part of the photography, the editing and the directing itself. Afterwards she will talk to the audience about her film.
The Eye Film Museum has recently digitally restored 'Transit Levantkade'. You will of course see this version on October 19.
