About event

How do you become an era-defining metal band? Is it thanks to unparalleled levels of intensity? Hooks strong enough to make everyone within earshot sing along? Or is it something as simple as the confidence to pursue your dreams despite all odds?

Whatever the hidden ingredient, While She Sleeps has it.

The world heard for the first time singer Loz Taylor, guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh, bassist Aaran Mckenzie and drummer Adam Savage together on the EP The North Stands for Nothing, released in 2010. Ears instantly perked up to their energy and ambition. The Sleeps' bombardment of punk attitude and seething metal shattered expectations, as did each of their subsequent albums. The integration of pop, electronica and conscious lyrics, which tackle depression and anxiety head-on, has kept the band ahead of their peers. In 2021, Metal Hammer called "Sleep Society" "an album very fitting for these troubled times, from a band we can continue to believe in"; its impact was followed by a landmark set at Download Pilot and, in 2023, a sold-out concert in front of 10,000 people at London's Alexandra Palace.

All the while, Sleeps has remained proudly and resolutely DIY. They avoided the pitfalls of the conventional music industry by building their own base in their hometown of Sheffield. They release everything on their label, Sleeps Brothers, while writing, self-managing, demoing, producing and directing music videos exclusively from their HQ. These tireless creatives go so far as to build their own stage sets, which have accompanied them on highly successful tours across five continents, visiting countries from Canada to Colombia, from Thailand to Taiwan.
< However, even in a career marked by bold moves, “Self Hell” is truly special. The Sleeps' sixth album (produced by Sean Long and his long-time collaborator Carl Bown) casts an even wider net, covering symphonic music, hardcore, synth-rock and metal. Yet, through all these styles, the group never loses sight of its ability to produce confident, stadium-ready anthems, nor its desire to defend everyone's mental health.

"Before "to get to 'self-help', you have to get to 'self-hell'", explains Sean Long. “Before you have the courage to take care of yourself, to discover the problem and tackle it directly, you have to reach a point of hell inside yourself. “Self Hell” is the take of awareness that you have to go through so much shit for something to have meaning, and above all to succeed in taking care of yourself."

"This is the place where we find ourselves before realizing that we have to do something about it", summarizes Mat Welsh.
The two titles "Peace of Mind" and "Leave Me Alone" instantly announce the objectives of "Self Hell": to break genres , bring together arenas and promote well-being. The first track draws you in with a symphony of strings and choral vocals, before its successor contrasts this grandeur with pounding metallic guitars. When lush synthetic textures and a cathartic chorus about getting rid of the world's bullshit ("Leave me the fuck alone!") are added, it's clear that Sleeps is at its most eclectic and focused. to this day.
On "Rainbows", electro and metal come together in the name of adrenaline, with Loz screaming over a frenzied drum and bass rhythm. "Down" reaffirms the Sleeps' current place at the heart of British metal by welcoming Alex Taylor, lead singer of Sheffield band Malevolence, while "Dopesick", a pop-metal track, addresses the dangers of identifying with one's mental illness: “I’m getting high, on feeling low,” says its gentle refrain. The eponymous track, released as a single in September, has already proven its contagious power, its riffs having made the whole of Ally Pally jump last year.

While She Sleeps is as confident in itself as the music of “Self Hell” is in its desire to break conventions. Sean Long said: "What I want when the album comes out is for it to show everyone that you can be who you've always been and it works. Ally Pally gave it to me already proven."

"In the next two years, I want to make this concert a regular occurrence", adds Mat Welsh. "I hope this is where people see what it's like if you stay true to your creativity and don't jump on a trend."

While She Sleeps are already among the most great stars of British metal, and when their growing fans hear the vision, prowess and exhilaration of "Self Hell", there is no doubt that this star will go supernova.
