About event
The debate about child welfare and custody has gained momentum in recent years. Because family structures are becoming increasingly diverse, for example through patchwork or rainbow families. A central question is how new family forms influence child well-being and how many caregivers are good for a child. The focus of the event is on legal and emotional challenges as well as the effects of multi-parent constellations on child development.
The political discussion on this is more topical than ever. At the beginning of 2025, the Federal Ministry of Justice presented key points for modernizing custody, visitation and adoption laws. Since then, there has been heated debate about whether and how multi-parent constellations should be legally anchored. Supporters see this as an overdue step towards recognizing lived diversity, while critics fear legal uncertainties and risks for the well-being of children.
In this event we bring two perspectives into the dialogue:
Dr. Lucy Chebout analyzes the legal challenges of current reform projects and discusses what opportunities and limitations family law offers with regard to multiple parenthood.
Dr. Julia Teschlade sheds light on the situation of LGBTQ+ and multi-parent families from a sociological perspective, their strategies of normalization and their struggles for social and legal recognition.
The aim of the event is to provide orientation in the complex area of tension between child welfare, parental rights and social change.
