About event
For centuries queer people had to hide. Around the Naschmarkt, alleys, parks and backyards preserve their traces - and on this Vienna Pride Walk we make them visible and tangible. Because the absence of queer history is not a coincidence, but the result of systematic erasure. We counter this forgetting with memory and appropriation.
The Naschmarkt – today a colorful meeting place for connoisseurs from all over the world. But behind its lively facade lies a fascinating queer soul: a multi-faceted queer nightlife that was only allowed to exist in the shadows for decades pulsated and still pulsates here. This Vienna Pride Walk brings it to light.
What awaits you?
Secret places & living stories We reveal the history of queer life around the Naschmarkt - from secret meeting places to legendary trendy bars that were often only known to those in the know.
Between prohibition and desire In one At a time when homosexual contacts were strictly forbidden, courageous people defied the repression: in parks, in hidden places, in public toilets - self-created spaces of freedom and community.
From the hidden to the visible We explore the diverse queer life along the Naschmarkt - from then to now. The walk ends at Qwien, the center for queer history in Vienna.
What awaits you?
Persecution & Injustice We learn how homosexual men, women and trans people were systematically persecuted, criminalized and murdered during the Nazi era - and which places in Vienna are associated with these fates.
Courage & ResistanceDespite persecution and despair, there were people who resisted and did not give up their identity. We tell their stories.
Remembrance & Responsibility This tour is an act of remembrance - of all those whose lives were destroyed during the Nazi era, and a mandate to all of us not to forget this history.
For whom? Anyone who wants to discover queer history, city history and Vienna off the beaten path - whether alone, with friends or as a Group.
