About event

By: Sophie van Ginneken

Amsterdam by Strange Eyes; Tourist city in the making
Sophie van Ginneken gives us a broad picture of the development of tourism. The first travel guides still take visitors to 'primitive', typical Dutch life. The waterfront of the water city, working on the streets in the Jewish Quarter, philanthropic institutions such as the Orphanage and the Institute for the Blind, they become an attraction. With the Rijksmuseum, the city becomes more of an art city and a 'modern experience'. And Amsterdam will more consciously portray itself as the tolerant city from the so-called Golden Age, tolerant and free-spirited. What will be the attraction of the Jordaan or the Albert Cuyp?
