The Zamrock legend WITCH comes to Gretchen with Zambian psychedelic funk rock.

WITCH, short for We Intend To Cause Havoc, were the biggest in the 1970s Zambian rock band and developed a new genre: Zamrock. They fused influences from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath to James Brown, mixed them with traditional African rhythms and bush village songs and later were inspired by disco and boogie.

We Intend To Cause Havoc means something like: We intend to cause chaos. With WITCH, the name said it all: When their lead singer Jagari - whose name refers to Mick Jagger - stirred up the crowd with breakneck stage-diving activities, it often took the help of the police to keep the ecstatic crowd at bay while WITCH's mix of psychedelic rock and African rhythms permeated the surroundings.

Recession, totalitarian politics and HIV brought the Zamrock era to an abrupt end end. Emanyeo “Jagari” Chanda is the only founding member of the band who did not die as a result of HIV.

WITCH gained worldwide attention in 2012 when Now Again Records reissued the discography. Jagari was able to play concerts again with a new line-up and began a collaboration with the Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskoviç. WITCH went on a successful first-ever European tour with them in 2017. Since then, WITCH have been to our Gretchen twice with new material and old songs.
