When the Russian invasion of Ukraine begins on February 24, 2022, Ukrainian museums disappear from Google Maps and works of art are stored underground. As cultural institutions increasingly come under threat, an army of volunteers sets out to protect Ukraine's cultural heritage from destruction. The war for art becomes a fight to save the nation.
“Wojna o sztukę / War on Art” takes viewers on an extraordinary rescue operation of millions of priceless works of art from over 150 Ukrainian museums. Some were lost, many were destroyed or stolen by the invaders' army - but most were hidden in places that are still known to few.
Thousands of museum employees, volunteers, artists, engineers and other committed people took the initiative to evacuate works of art from endangered places. Some museums and collectors chose the “hide by showing” method and organized exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, London or Vienna. Many Europeans learned for the first time how rich Ukrainian art is. Many museums around the world changed the descriptions of works, pointing out that artists like Kazimir Malevich and hundreds of others who were considered Russian artists for decades were actually Ukrainians.
“War on Art” evokes the style of an investigative crime film - in dark cool colors, with handheld cameras, master shots and alternating close-up and long-distance shots. Many stories from the past are presented in the style of a thriller - with dynamic editing, occasionally supplemented by animated reconstructions as well as photos and films from the archive. When we follow the current actions of the characters, the film slows down its pace. You often hear questions or comments from the director. The filmmakers don't pretend they aren't there - but there is no narrator. The story is told exclusively by the characters themselves.
