Deep Space 1 was a space probe launched on October 24, 1998 (14:08 CEST). It was the first probe to be included in the New Millennium program. Its main goal was research into new technologies and processes - primarily ion engines and autonomous control systems. It investigated the asteroid (9969) Braille and the comet 19P/Borrelly.
A full 20 years earlier, to the exact day, the first Czechoslovak satellite was launched on October 24, 1978 from the Soviet Arctic cosmodrome Pleseck by a Kosmos-3M launch vehicle (together with the mother satellite Interkosmos-18) satellite Magion 1.
