WONK UNIT (UK)
Wonk Unit are a band from London that is completely unique in Europe. They have their own sound, their own humor, their own festival and also a cult series of t-shirts. Everything they do is based on a deeply rooted DIY approach. The heart and creative engine of the band is Alex Brindle Johnson - a singer, but at the same time a poet, skater and performer. Many claim that Wonk Unit are the most exciting thing happening on the European punk scene at the moment.
The history goes back to 1992 when Alex formed the band The Flying Medallions (punk was basically dead in Britain at the time). After the sad loss of bass player Dougie Palompo, Wonk Unit was formed around 2005. Alex then ended up in a rehearsal room with two insanely talented musicians – drummer Mez Clough and guitarist Gavin Kinch. Their playing gave Alex's songwriting a whole new dimension and everything sounded incredibly fresh. Music was created that defies genre boundaries, but at the same time accurately describes who Alex and the whole band are.
Wonk Unit has always been mainly "Alex". His songs are his personal diary. He makes music for himself, just like he skates or paints for himself. He never wanted to force Wonk Unit on anyone, it's too personal for him.
Alex's original motto still stands today: They will never ask anyone for a concert, a review, a record or sponsorship. Wonk Unit only go where they are wanted and where people appreciate them.
