Content of the workshop:
Cat friendly approach (lecture and practical exercises on cats, Dr. Černá)
Cats have evolved with emotions and behaviors that are necessary for their survival as both predator and prey. The clinical environment and required veterinary examinations can result in behavioral responses to protective (negative) emotions. Cat-friendly interactions require understanding, interpreting and responding appropriately to cats' emotional states. They need to be given a sense of control when performing the manipulation for the examination. This lecture and workshop will focus on the new AAFP/ISFM guidelines for veterinary interaction with cats. "Cat Friendly" approach and handling techniques assist veterinarians and veterinary nurses in interacting with and handling cats to reduce the impact of fear and other protective (negative) emotions, thereby improving feline well-being. By implementing these guidelines, team satisfaction and client confidence in the veterinary team will increase, and our care of feline patients will also improve. During this lecture and workshop, veterinarians will learn how important it is to understand and respond appropriately to the cat's current emotional state, as well as how to adapt each visit to the individual patient.
Measurement of blood pressure and comorbidity in hypertension in cats (lecture, Dr. Černá)
Hypertension is a common disease in older cats, which is usually diagnosed in connection with other diseases, such as chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism (so-called secondary hypertension), but there is also primary hypertension. The clinical consequences of hypertension can be serious, related to "target organ damage" (eye, heart, brain, and kidney), and early diagnosis followed by appropriate treatment is important to reduce the morbidity of these patients. Although this is a common disease in cats, routine blood pressure monitoring is unfortunately not often performed in practice, which probably leads to underdiagnosis of feline hypertension in clinical practice. This lecture will focus on the practical possibilities of measuring blood pressure in cats and the treatment of hypertension.
Examination of the eye and retina (lecture, Dr. Beránek)
Ophthalmological examination in a cat has its own specifics. Just as handling the patient has its differences, which we will discuss in the morning part, so does the actual ophthalmological examination. It is performed with a significantly lower intensity of the light beam compared to examinations in dogs or horses, for example, the shape of the pupil and the depth of the anterior chamber of the eye and the availability of the iridocorneal angle are different. The retina of cats is holangiotic, and therefore we will try to "peek" at a wide range of physiological variants, as well as their differentiation from various forms of pathologies of the anatomical and functional state of the retina.
Ophthalmological diagnosis of patients with hypertension and the possibilities of differential diagnosis (lecture, Dr. Beránek)
Hyphema, unresponsive mydriasis, fibrin in the vitreous, retinal detachment or subretinal hemorrhage, these are all typical symptoms of a patient with hypertension, but what are the potential differential diagnoses? All of this will be the subject of a lecture presented in the form of case studies.
Blood pressure measurement and ophthalmological examination in cats in practice (practical exercise on cats, Dr. Černá and Dr. Beránek)
Practical part will focus on measuring blood pressure in cats using Doppler and also oscillometric methods. We will learn how to correctly choose blood pressure cuffs and also in which position to measure blood pressure in cats and how to handle blood pressure measuring devices.
Another part of the workshop is an ophthalmological examination of feline patients with a focus on diagnosis and differential diagnosis of patients with altered blood pressure. We will have the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the examination of the fundus, intraocular pressure and ultrasonographic examination of the fundus. We will also examine the great variability of the physiological findings of funduscopy.
The seminar is evaluated by points within the framework of continuous education KVL CR and KVL SK (please enter your KVL number in the notes in the basket).
Points from the Norbrook loyalty program and the Purina veterinary program can be used for payment.
The program is subject to change.
