About event
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Paul Verhoeven’s debut American studio film FLESH + BLOOD (1985) with WYRD WAR’s rare 35mm presentation on its August 30th U.S. release date!
Set against the bleak war torn landscape of 1501 Italy, FLESH + BLOOD stands as a bold and uncompromising counterstatement to the heroic sword & sorcery fantasy tropes of the 80s. Not for the squeamish, this epic tale of morally corrupt mercenaries wandering a plague infected medieval wasteland where betrayal, revenge and baser instincts hold sway set the template for the graphic violence and provocative sexual content that would characterize Verhoeven’s more popular and satirical films to come. Rutger Hauer is icy cold alongside co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh, whose performance demands the viewer’s attention even as she is degraded and mistreated by barbaric oafs. No dragons will be trained in this sobering and relentlessly grim portrayal of humanity stumbling through the darkest of ages for a foothold and a sack of loot.
