About event
XIU The band has released numerous full-length albums which have been praised by publications such as The New Yorker, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, NME and many others. An avant-garde, noisy and noisy post-electro combo, Xiu Xiu stops at nothing to experiment with adventurous sounds. After spending twenty years researching how to treat, disobey, reorganize and be empathetic in the face of horror, “Ignore Grief” sees the light of day in 2023.
Angela Seo sings on half of the record. Jamie Stewart sings on the other half of the record. Between experimental industrial music and experimental modern classical music. Half of it is real. The other half is imaginary. Old friend and new member David Kendrick (Sparks, Devo, Gleaming Spires) accompanies Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart in the search for what it can be, what it can mean. The purpose of the cosmetic exam is to see if there is a way to come out the other side or if there is even a reason. In either case there may not be, but to simply turn away would be another act of destruction. Xiu Xiu offers an experience not to be missed, with a vibrant, roaring show of today's most cutting-edge music.
+ EVICSHEN
Victoria Shen is a sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument maker based in San Francisco.
The Shen's sound practice is interested in the spatiality/physics of sound and its relationship with the human body. Her music uses analog modular synthesizers, vinyl/resin records and electronic devices that she made herself. Abandoning conventions of harmony and rhythm in favor of extreme textures and gestural tones, Shen uses what she calls “chaotic sound” to contrast signal and information, eluding traditionally embedded meanings.
Her identity personal, her body, is the space she uses to restructure the sense of sound. In her live performances, she offers an exploration between meaning and nonsense through the physical activation of sonic tropes. By probing these melodic voids, she questions the way in which we perceive the value of auditory experiences. The instruments and objects she makes, which resemble appendages, illustrate Shen's ability to embody through sound her interest in the tension created by opposition: control and chaos, the unique and the mass-produced. , the practical and the absurd.
