About event
Yoràn Vroom is a drummer, composer and teacher at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He is seen as one of the most original drummers in the Netherlands. The documentary 'Master of Drums', who has recently released, is striking where the power of his play and music comes from. His style is deeply rooted in West African and Caribbean rhythms, and breaks traditional roles in music. "In my band there is no Western separation between rhythm and harmony," he says. "We play total football - everyone can take the melody, even the drums."
His band Group of Friends consists of his brother and childhood friends from the Rivierenbuurt in Amsterdam, who are now all top musicians. Together they create an energetic collective in which improvisation, groove and cultural depth come together. With work of the album Across A Spectrum (2021) and the A Forgotten Story project, Vroom shows how jazz can be personal and groundbreaking.
