About event
Yuki Onna is a character from Japanese mythology. She appears as a mysterious woman with long black hair who emerges from the icy silence of the snow and invites the children to play with the wind. The stage transforms into a sparkling snow landscape. Visually expressive passages from the fairy tale are heard in English, German and Japanese and merge with the flowing movements of Aya Toraiwa to create a poetic, sensual dance event for all generations.
"What frightens the adult companions does not seem to bother the children. They engage with what is shown on many levels: puzzles about the nature of the hair (are they real?); imitate movements; or catch the snowflakes Trickle down to the ground in a scene. Sophisticated art for a young audience is possible and worthwhile, as Isabelle Schad and her team prove.”
Elena Philipp, dance
Yuki Onna – the snow woman by Isabelle Schad and Aya Toraiwa invites everyone aged five and over to immerse themselves in the snowy landscape of the Japanese myth. […] The floor of the small stage is covered with snow-white fabrics. Wisps of mist hang in the air. Dancer Aya Toraiwa stands at the front of the stage and looks at the curious children’s faces in the audience.”
