About event
The department of manuscripts and old prints organizes a cycle of lectures on which it wants to bring the public closer to interesting topics in the field of historical funds and to acquaint visitors with some extraordinary documents from their collections. As part of each lecture, one original of a rare historical manuscript or press will be seen by lecturers or his professional assistant. Free admission.
11. February 2025 - Medieval Library of religious canons of st. Augustine in Prague at Charles. Augustine in Prague's Charles. The history of the canon will be presented here since its foundation in 1350 until the definitive abolition of 1784 and attention will be paid to the events that could influence the local library.
11. March 2025 - Angry confessor and handbook book of monastic teacher. What interactions could have occurred between the religious and their confessor? How did the nun educated and what did they read for their spiritual encouragement? Did they really live in accordance with the religion that they committed to adherence? In the lecture we will focus on an educational manuscript, which was written by the Ostrov monk Martin in the early 15th century for the needs of one of the nuns of the monastery of St. George at Prague Castle. Thanks to this unique source we can learn many details from the life of Prague's Benedictines during the reign of Wenceslas IV. Even about the ideas of the ideal monastic community, which, according to the author of the Code of St. George's monastery, could not have received in many ways.
8. April 2025 - The oldest manuscripts of Czech Bible translation.
In the collections of the National Library, several manuscripts and manuscripts of the 14th century have been preserved, which illustrate the beginnings of the Czech translation of the Bible. They are both the oldest old Czech psalters and gospels, which served primarily as aids for understanding Latin liturgy and manuscripts with parts of the oldest translation of the entire Bible from the reign of Charles IV. In the lecture we will focus on the Gospel of St. Matthew with Homilia, a unique set of homily with the complete Czech wording of Matthew's Gospel, which comes from the environment associated with the establishment of the oldest wording of the Czech Bible.
13. May 2025 - Music Collection of the Strachota family.
The music collection to the Kantorský family of Strachota from Virgin Tynec is an important set of historical sources stored in the music department of the National Library. The mostly manuscript music from the period roughly between 1775 and 1850 was gradually made by four generations of Panen-Tyni teachers and directors of the bark, and used for music operation in the local Church of Sts. Jiří.
