About event
Žabovřesky, one of the four large Czech suburbs of the majority of German Brno, retained a rural character throughout the 19th century and transformed into a urban residential zone only in the first decades of the 20th century. The initiation moment of the formation of Žabovřesk as a suburban zone of private housing meant the arrival of architect Dušan Jurkovič, who built his own villa here in 1906. Subsequently, the so -called Czech clerical district, a colony of family houses, which was built by the Czech clerical building cooperative, began to be established nearby. After 1918, Žabovřesky became a sought -after location for the construction of family housing built for the first time in a large scale for mostly Czech employee middle class. The preserved development of family houses in gardens is a proof of extraordinary generosity of state support programs of the 20th and 1930s, but also the idea of solving one of the thorny contemporary topics, the form of modern individual housing. Modernist and traditionalist elements in this type of buildings meet in original synthesis, often with a remarkable result of indisputable aesthetic qualities.
