About event
Understanding. An instrument of truth, individual wisdom or a light in the darkness? Western civilization has relied on these claims for centuries. Nowadays, however, confidence in reason and its sound critical judgment is shaken. How is it possible that people - creatures endowed with reason - so easily believe misinformation and hoaxes?
The production Mystery of Reason, directed by Jana Šturdíková, seeks answers to these questions in a funny and comprehensible form - not only from the point of view of science, but also through everyday situations and absurd examples from history. The trio of actresses, as a probe into the mechanisms of the human mind, bring closer the everyday subjection to mental distortions, thanks to which even geniuses make mistakes just like all of us.
The mystery of the mind is an adaptation of the book of the same name by two cognitive scientists, Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber. It examines how critical thinking works, its evolutionary origins, and how we use it today. Research confirms that this is a highly flawed mechanism that people use more to defend what they irrationally believe than to think and search for the truth. According to experts, reason does not work alone and does not serve to find the best possible response in a specific situation.
So how to use reason in such a way that we can think critically, and not just submit to what we want to believe? Is it even possible?
