About event
As part of the professional seminars of our institute under the auspices of the scientific council, we hereby invite you to a workshop on the topic "Forgotten schools - inclusive education in the shadow of segregation" led by Radek Vorlíček from the Institute of Social Anthropology FSEV UK.
The event will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 from 1 p.m. Bratislava.
It will also be possible to participate in the workshop online, via the Zoom platform:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84312951983?pwd=kapNxU8zjPrbUQaw1iMQSv5FE0c98H.1
The workshop is based on ethnographic research at elementary schools near Roma settlements in eastern Slovakia, in an environment of social inequalities and poverty that shape the daily functioning of schools and the research itself. It focuses on schools that have long remained on the sidelines of educational policy and public debate and that often lack systematic support. Part of the workshop is the presentation of selected findings that capture the current situation of these schools and show how the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion are reproduced in their daily functioning. At the same time, specific forms of inclusive efforts, their daily limits and the tension between the declared principles of inclusion and the real conditions of school practice are analyzed. The workshop also addresses ethical issues, power inequalities and the role of the researcher in examining the school environment, children and other vulnerable groups.
The workshop opens a debate on the quality and justice of education in the context of structural inequality and points to the need for more systematic support for schools that have been dealing with these conditions for a long time, but remain on the fringes of political interest.
Funded by the EU NextGenerationEU through the SROV Recovery and Resilience Plan.
