The New York Underground, this undoubted underground movement, has just lost one of its giants, Ka. A few years ago, MF Doom, another larger name with foundational calls to the city, left this plan. Superheroes of Rhyme and Instrumental, masters in different causes and, above all, representatives of this school that forms and goes ahead without resorting to commercial tricks, just an innate desire to present us a new angle with each maneuver. Heir of this way of being, Mike was born in an era where the internet gave him an unlimited ability to reach his audience and space with liberation/validation tools. And that's what he allowed him, still feeling the weight of adulthood, finding many devotees with May God Bless Your Hustle (2017), a compendium of reflections/observations of those who had to grow a lot (and early) in a short time with constant home changes, an inconstancy combined with depressions since he was first (herself lived alone). In this complicated place, between obscure loops rescued to Soul and Jazz songs, a single voice burst to, with technique and emotion, call the spotlight to themselves. Big Mike!

There are almost 10 years of creative production and evolution has been a constant in Michael Bonema's life, since his solo discography (with superlative albums such as War in My Pen, Weight of the World, Beware of the Monkey or Burning Desire) and collaborations with the elite not only of the most alternative rap (Earl Sweatship, Wiki, Navy, Navy, Dan, Dan Ny Brown) as well as R&B Vanguard and most experimental music (Liv.E, Klein, Standing on the Corner). It has also approached The Alchemist, doing a project (Faith is a rock) with him and Patrick Morales and participating in work such as Flying High (Bless), This Thing of Outs 2 (“Lossless”) and Voir Dire (“Sentry”). In Pinball, a disc out of 2024, the MC stirred on other waves and in the company of producer Tony Seltzer, who pulled him to trap, Drill and Cloud Rap cadences and forced him to demonstrate a different resourcefulness alongside official representatives of these other frequencies such as Tony Shnow or Jay Critch. It was well, obviously. Very recently, conversations about a new rationing came to the ride of “Pieces of a Dream”, a single produced by himself and with music video by Ryosuke Tanzawa.

The work of this “Renaissance Man” (which, while Beatmaker, signs as DJ BlackPower) goes beyond the musical creation, having been one of the founders of the Slums collective, the Young World festival and the 10K publisher. Sites, people and communities where art is valued in its raw, honest and well done form. Your views from a better and more transparent world. As long as so, nothing is lost. (Alexandre Ribeiro)
