About event
80 years of the Frankfurter Rundschau - Karlen Vesper in conversation with Claus-Jürgen Göpfert
It was communist, social democratic and Catholic anti-fascists who founded the Frankfurter Rundschau 80 years ago. In the old Federal Republic it rose to become a formative left-wing daily newspaper that was even able to influence government policy at times with its stories and research. But the milieus that initially supported them changed - and new competition arose. At the same time, rapid technical changes began to revolutionize the established market. The FR also opened up to digital media too late.
After several changes of ownership, bankruptcy and ever new “austerity measures”, the remaining editorial team is still trying to maintain a committed and critical profile of the newspaper. In an interview with Karlen Vesper from the new Germany, Claus-Jürgen Göpfert tells the history of the daily newspaper and its upheavals against the background of the respective socio-political developments.
Claus-Jürgen Göpfert was editor from 1985 to 2020 and most recently chairman of the works council of the Frankfurter Rundschau. His most recent book “Zeitung im Kampf” about 80 years of FR has been published by VSA:Verlag.
Karlen Vesper has been an employee of the new Germany since 1982, a socialist daily newspaper, which will also look back on 80 years of history next year. She is a book author, a member of the historical commission on the board of the Die Linke party and a board member of the Helle Panke e.V. association.
An event organized by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung in cooperation with the Münzenbergforum Berlin, the Hellen Panke, the Left Media Academy (LIMA) and the VSA:Verlag.
