About event
Escape aid and fate at the Berlin Wall
Joachim Neumann, one of the most famous escape aides and most successful tunnel digger ever, reports in his lecture and subsequent conversation about “his” tunnel constructions, the most famous of which are “Tunnel 29” and “Tunnel 57”, both located on Bernauer Strasse, which went down in history. A total of 99 people reached freedom through the tunnels, which Joachim Neumann was involved in. His future wife, Christa, also came through his last one, “Tunnel 57”.
Joachim Neumann was born on March 17, 1939 in Berlin. In 1957 he graduated from high school in Berlin-Köpenick and then studied civil engineering in Cottbus. In December 1961 he fled to West Berlin with a Swiss passport and continued his civil engineering studies at the TU Berlin. Since spring 1962 he has been involved in a total of six escape tunnels. His motivation was primarily the desire to help others, just as he had been helped to escape, and the promise he made to his friends in East Berlin to look for escape routes for them. In 1965 he married his girlfriend Christa, who had escaped through “Tunnel 57”. In 1967 he completed his studies at the TU Berlin, followed by work in the construction industry and in international consulting with residence in Frankfurt am Main; Joachim Neumann has been retired since 2003. After the death of his wife in 2005, he has been living in Berlin again since 2006.
