Event by: Die Baptisten in Berlin „Friedenskirche Charlottenburg“
Location: Bismarckstraße 40, Bismarckstraße 40, Berlin - Bezirk Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf
About event

A Berlin Jew survived the Holocaust in Shanghai
A Jewish life between Charlottenburg, escape and a new beginning
Participation only with registration
The focus of the evening is the moving life of Ernst Glaser, born in Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1924. As a Jewish
boy, he and his family had to flee Nazi persecution - via Italy the family reached
Shanghai, one of the few refuges for Jewish refugees during the Second World War. When the Japanese took control there, the Glasers were forced into a ghetto. After the war, he began a new life - first in China, later in the USA, where he now lives, at the age of 101, as Ernest Glaser.
The social economist (Univ.) and author Birgit Mair visited him in the USA in 2024, interviewed him and documented his life on film. In her new
book "Ernest Glaser: A Berlin Jew Survived the Holocaust in Shanghai" she tells his story between Berlin, escape, survival and new beginnings.
At the event, Birgit Mair reads from her book and shows film excerpts from the interviews.
The highlight of the evening: Ernst Glaser will be connected live from the USA, will personally report on his moving life story and answer questions from the audience. An event as part of the remembrance work of the Friedenskirche Charlottenburg from the Charlotte learning and memorial site at the Schillerstrasse playhouse www.charlotte.spielhaus-schillerstrasse.de
