About event
Like many other activities, traveling remained the exclusive domain of men for many years. It was a dangerous, time- and financially demanding activity that was denied to women because it distracted them from their "natural" duties. High-ranking and well-to-do noblewomen aside, the possibility of traveling opened up to a greater number of women only in the course of the 19th century. Even then, however, it did not become a mass issue. Going on a journey as a woman still means crossing not only geographical but also social boundaries.
The purpose of the Women Travelers, Women on Travels conference is to discuss the phenomenon of female travel in the widest possible context.
