About event

The guided tour assembles the story of Jewish Bratislava into an understandable mosaic - from the first traces of the community, through expulsions and returns, the flowering of scholarship and religious life, to the tragedies of the 20th century and the living memory of today.
We will go through places where history has often taken place: past defunct synagogues, in the streets of Podhradia, places where the great names of European Jewry were born, but also where families lived their lives, whose names we do not know today.

We will start in the Franciscan Garden (Uršulínska/Františkánska).
Here we take a closer look at when and why Jews came to Prešpork: when did the first merchants and craftsmen come here, attracted by the location near trade routes.
decades. On the tour, we will explain the reasons for these measures: from religious and political pressures to economic conflicts. We will show how the community always returned, restored prayer houses and schools, and how the city changed along with it.

We will also remember the fires that repeatedly destroyed Podhradie and interrupted local continuity - places where the daily life of many Jewish families pulsated.
Fires did not take into account religion; they took homes, livelihoods and the memory of the streets. On the spot, we will talk about how this part of the city always rose again after the disasters - and how the later rehabilitations changed its face forever.

The defunct synagogues and smaller prayer houses will be an important chapter. We will talk about what religious life looked like, what the difference between the orthodox and neologism branches meant, and why the diversity of traditions made Bratislava Jewry so colorful.

We will talk about the legacy of Chatam Sofer and his successors. We will also touch on other personalities of the 19th and 20th centuries who left a lasting mark on the city's history.

We will talk about what it meant to be a Jew in interwar Bratislava: about associations, sports, charity, schools, but also about everyday coexistence, when Slovak, German, Hungarian and Yiddish mingled in one square. We will stop briefly at stone "memories underfoot" - stolpersteins, which remind us of specific names and fates in front of houses. The great catcher of Jews, Jewish transports...
We will approach the years 1939–1945 sensitively, matter-of-factly and respectfully: anti-Jewish regulations, Aryanization, deportations in 1942 and their renewal after the occupation of Slovakia in 1944.
We will present figures of resistance and rescue, but also examples of collaboration. We will talk about why names are more important than numbers and why the memory of the city is the duty of us who walk these streets freely today.

The tour is supposed to be a bridge between knowledge and experience. It will not be a dry "history lesson": we will read old maps, identify disappeared streets, mentally enter doors that no longer exist, and connect great histories with the stories of families, children and neighbors so that their names are not lost.
