Winter solstice, which this year falls on 21.12.2025. Our ancestors accepted the gifts and movements of nature with humility, with gratitude and took only as much as they needed, they valued every tree, animal. They lived according to the Sun, which was also called Kolo, meaning circle, and the days of the solar equinox and the solstices were the most accurate calendar. This is the rotation of the Sun, which personifies the arrival of a new period and carries the meaning of the struggle between day and night, light and darkness. In autumn, nature plunges into darkness and sleep, in spring it awakens to new life. This is our Circle of Life - the solar Spinning Wheel.
The legend about the Winter Solstice says that the evil Koracun, or in our case Kračun, the lord of the frost, tries to steal the sun and shorten the day. Until recently, the period that is now known to people earlier than Christmas and in some areas as Коляда, Koľada was called Kračúň. The winter solstice and the following days are a celebration of the sun, the first month of winter begins and the forces of light gradually gain dominance over the forces of darkness.
Before the winter solstice, it is good to finish important things, pay off debts and resolve disputes. On the night before the holiday, for example, women baked bread in the shape of the sun, attracting its energy to the house, and the smell of fresh bread drove away unclean forces and filled the house with positive energy. In the morning, the family member who was the first to get out of bed went to collect water from the well, with which he sprinkled the others, which symbolized paying respect to the water element and at the same time cleansing the household. Early in the morning, the village men went to the forest to look for a dry tree - Badniak, which they brought home, decorated with ribbons and prepared for the evening ceremony by the fire.
The element of fire is the most important element at the winter solstice. The main fire was lit at sunset so that the ceremonial fire would absorb the last remnants of the Sun's power and sustain itself throughout the night. When lighting the fire, a formula was pronounced: "The fire burns - protects the family, the flame illuminates - drives away evil spirits". Then the prepared Badniak was brought, either as a whole tree, or everyone brought a log partially stripped of the bark, with a sun symbol carved into it. The dry tree was completely burned, the log was left to burn in the fire and taken home. When the most severe frosts came, Badniak snuggled up to the family hearth. Burning wheels were used during the ceremonial bonfire, just as at the summer solstice, but during the winter they did not roll down the hill, but were lifted up to indicate the arrival of the new sun, which would rise higher and higher from now on. The winter days of Kračúň or Koľada are a celebration of light and sun, accompanied by spiritual cleansing, singing, dancing, carols and other customs, but that is for another post.
