About event

Františka Dočekalová - Women's work and worker activism from below at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries

- lecture by labor historian Boleslav Šmejkal

Accompaniment program to the current exhibition LIKE A STONE AGAINST THE SKY

History is often still interpreted as stories of great and powerful men. In the lecture, labor historian Boleslav Šmejkal will show that in order to understand our history, we also need a view from below, at people's everyday lives, their struggles and their participation in major social changes. Using the example of Františka Dočekalová, a worker and trade unionist from Třebíč, who lived at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century, she will outline the living conditions of people in industrial cities, the history of women's work, the history of worker activism and how a "small" person could intervene in major events, such as the creation of Czechoslovakia.

Boleslav Šmejkal is a labor historian. After his master's studies at CEU in Vienna and Budapest, he works as a doctoral student in modern social history at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. He mainly focuses on the social and cultural history of Central Europe in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. His research topics include the history of labor, the history of the labor movement, workers' sport and physical education, and the history of affordable housing. He is a member of the Tenants' Initiative and the football team Random Radical.

The exhibition series titled SYSTEM TEST for the year 2026 in the Prostor Olga gallery continues the themes of previous years (2025- DR. UMÚMNÍ, 2024 – COLLECTIVE HERITAGE: ADAPTATION AND TRANSFORMATION, 2023 – RODIČOVSKÁ, 2022 – DAUGHTER SYNOVÉ MOTHER FATHER) by thematizing the transformative potential of art in a broader social concept.

The gallery project is implemented with the financial support of the Prague 10 City Council office City of Prague and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

The Olga space with the gallery is open to the public every Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. You can also visit the exhibition during accompanying events. Or by appointment on the phone 777 557 828.
