About event
📽 We invite you to a screening of a selection of Czech and Slovak student short films. The films will be followed by a discussion with the creators.
Výročie
(dir. Karel Prouza, 24 min., FAMU)
The short film Výročie is a comedy-drama story of an elderly widower, Mr. Kratin, who hires his companion Anna to celebrate his 40th anniversary with his late wife. He wants to spend a pleasant, but completely honorable evening with her - with all the requisites of an almost romantic meeting - and at least for a while banish his long-term feelings of loneliness and isolation from the world.
Despite the initial age and social barrier, Mr. Kratina and Anna gradually begin to understand each other. They discover that they can understand each other, listen to each other and for one summer evening quieten their lonely lives - he as an abandoned widower, her as a socially excluded prostitute.
However, the situation is not so clear-cut and in the second half of the film the viewer discovers that Anna has another intention when visiting her client.
The film is an intimate sequence of situations that take place during one night and captures bittersweet, smiling moments of two outwardly completely different people in the space of one small apartment.
Something is forever
(dir. Marie Topolová, Martin Imrich, 19 min., FAMU)
Alice, the main character of the film, finds herself between accepting a new life and accepting death. He regularly visits his ailing grandmother, who is still grieving for her son. At the same time, she discovers that she is pregnant and decides to keep the baby, even though she has just broken up with her boyfriend, with whom she was not happy.
Outwardly, Alice remains calm. Her blank gaze, as if looking through everything into the distance, tries at all costs not to reveal any emotions. We get inside her through surrealistic dream passages, in which Alice herself – and the viewer along with her – gradually reveals the layers of her confusion and inner burden.
Hot Flush
(dir. Hana Hančinová, 27 min., VŠMU)
Elena is a social curator who is just entering a new stage of her life, the period of menopause. As if that wasn't enough, Erik, one of the boys she tries to help for a long time, misinterprets some of Elena's gestures and initiates an unexpected sexual intercourse in the service toilets. He suddenly throws Elena into an existential crisis, where she has to deal with how she will continue to live her life.
