About event
"And Almighty God answered Mary very kindly: My mother, at this moment I had already begun to create a man in whom I wanted to put a large part of my glory ... But for the love I have for you, I will change him into a woman so that she can do the work, which you ask of me. Blessed Juana de la Cruz was becoming a man in her mother's womb at that moment, but God made her a woman, because even the Almighty God can do that. And his Divine Majesty did not want to take the Adam's apple that was in her throat to remain as a proof of this miracle.”
Santa Juana was an abbess of the Franciscan order in the 16th century and was one of the few women allowed to preach publicly . She delivered her "sermons" in an ecstatic state, in which Christ himself was said to be speaking through her mouth. In these sermons, gender and transgression of conservative gender norms are heavily thematized.
The history of medieval faith shows that transgression of gender could be a sign of holiness and not just damned and sinful. It is not necessary to imagine that the church in the Middle Ages was really more liberal, becoming a man for holy virgins was mainly about gaining a voice (agency). At the same time, it shows that the believers of that time were thinking about topics that we still deal with as a society today. , Ema Benčíková
