The global crisis forces academic institutions to react. With a certain degree of inertia, they are gradually taking on the role of the social avant-garde, e.g. by signing up to the imperatives of sustainability and green transformation, processing the #metoo moment, solidarity with Ukrainian refugees. But universities have so far failed to respond to the violence in Gaza and student protests. The paper will present several theses both on the nature and causes of this failure, and on the role and tasks of the university. Rather than a lecture, it will be arguments for discussion on an ever-evolving topic from the perspective of an academic involved in the recently established Initiative for a Critical Academy.
