About event

Cooperation event between the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment (SenMVKU)

How can Berlin in the year Will it be a livable, fair and ecologically stable city in 2045 – and what will it take to get there? This event invites you to rethink the connection between ecological challenges, democratic negotiation processes and social imagination.

Why do we need an idea of the future?
Climate crisis, decline in biological diversity and social tensions pose central questions to our democratic society: How do we want to live? Who is helping to design? And what future is even imaginable? Research and practice show that without concrete, positive images of the future, there is no orientation. But the future cannot be delegated - it arises through joint discussion, through utopias, scenarios and lived alternatives.

Why is multi-perspectivity so important?
Democracy thrives on discourse. Particularly in complex issues such as nature and environmental protection, the voices of many are needed: science, politics, administration, urban society, culture and civil society. Different perspectives make conflicts visible – and at the same time open up new possibilities. What initially seems incompatible can become productive in exchange. Multiperspectivity creates depth of focus, diversity and legitimacy - central building blocks for a resilient democracy.

Why are positive visions central?
Crises often generate fear and paralysis. In order to remain able to act, we need more than just warnings – we need images of what is possible. Visions are not just fantasies, but tools: They help us to recognize options for action, provide orientation and actively shape change. In a time of uncertainty, positive images of the future are not a luxury, but a democratic necessity.

What will happen at the event?
The focus of the evening is the joint development of future scenarios for Berlin: creative, concrete, multi-perspective. In interactive formats (utopia trip, small groups, fishbowl) we work with fictional newspaper articles, future postcards and collective images of an urban society in 2045. The results flow into a vision board - as impulses for new forms of discourse and togetherness for a sustainable city.
